Green Party calls on city to start rent control scheme

As the controversial Scottish Housing Bill moves through parliament, Green Party leader Senad Huy (pictured) is calling on councilors in Glasgow to show support for rent control in the city.

Some of Scotland's largest trade unions have already announced their support for rent control, including the TUC, UNISON, Unite, GMB and ASLEF.

Her call came after the city's private sector tenant-led housing committee claimed that “Glasgow is facing a rent crisis for many people in the private rented sector”.

The committee is calling on Glasgow City Council to work with the Scottish Government to introduce a points-based rent increase cap system. This assesses the standard/condition of the rental property and provides an incentive for landlords to make improvements that can be used to justify rent levels.

generous support

Mr Hoy's motion said: “While the council firmly supports the introduction of strong rent control as part of the Housing Bill, it is committed to working with COSLA and the Scottish Government to address any concerns regarding rent control. We will continue to work collaboratively with them in a constructive manner.”

As reported in The Neg last month, such regulations remain controversial, with Scottish Labour's shadow economy secretary Daniel Johnson saying: “The Housing Bill in its current form is untenable.”

MPs are being asked to approve a letter from the council president to the housing minister expressing support for rent controls within the housing bill.
