The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has shut down transport company GW Law Limited and suspended its director Christopher Williams for “suspicious reasons for fraud”.

The SRA also claims Williams has failed to comply with accounting rules and codes of conduct.

North West firm Stevensons Solicitors LLP was subsequently appointed to manage the firm's affairs.

GW Legal (trading name GW Law) was founded 40 years ago and operates from offices on Chapel Street (pictured) in central Liverpool.

We won several awards including 'Best Conveyancer' at the Specialist Finance Awards in 2016 and were shortlisted in the Best Conveyancing/Legal Search Services category at the Moneyfacts Awards in 2022.

At its peak, the number of staff increased to 80, but due to the pandemic, the number of employees decreased by a quarter, and as of July 2023, the number of employees was reduced to 32.

Appointment of administrator

In the same year (2023), the company filed a notice of intent to appoint administrators as part of what it described as a “restructuring process” and the remaining employees were transferred to GW Law Ltd.

HMRC records show that at the end of July 2023, the company had total net assets of approximately £825,000. Current assets have quadrupled to more than £2.2m in one year, while long-term debt has increased from zero to nearly £450,000.

The Law Society Gazette reports that GW Legal's phone number is now connected directly to the Stevensons' messaging service, but its Twitter account appears to still be active and has sent messages to various organizations over the past week. “Merry Christmas” messages were posted while continuing to promote legal services.
