War breaks out as tax increases in Wales' second home

Locals and opposition councillors have vented their rage with the plaid simul of the ruling party, as the new 100% council tax premiums run by Second Home, both on tourism and housing prices in Anglesey.

Plaid Cymru countered the criticism, claiming that “extra taxes are essential to control the island's holidays and second homes, and are important for using vacant property to combat the housing crisis.”

Anglesey opposition leader and independent Cllr Aled Morris Jones (main photo) says many locals are “struggling” to keep up with higher payments after inheriting family homes.

Serious concerns

Many locals have also expressed serious concern about the damage to the area's important tourism industry.

One Belvedere71 wrote in North Wales Live: Tourism is about the only thing we have left behind.”

Tourism is our bread and butter. shame on you. “

The other is, “Tourism is our bread and butter. Shame on us.”

There have been many questions about whether taxes will make homes more affordable for locals, and one resident, Maupick, said:

And JNRM adds: “You can knock £10,000 from the price, but if the buyer can't get a mortgage, you can't!”

However, not all locals agree, Krusty69 said: The little extra tax is pretty reasonable as I leave my house for £1,500 a week in the high season.”
