London council forces landlord to buy property in shock move

A “derelict property” in Tottenham that has remained vacant for six years has been compulsorily purchased by Haringey with the aim of reusing the vacant property.

The council said the three-bedroom house was in a state of severe disrepair and was filled with hoarded possessions, but was left empty when the previous tenant moved into a care home in 2018.

Mr Harringay said he had made numerous attempts to work with the owner (a limited company) to restore the house and bring it back into use, but little progress had been made, so he issued a compulsory purchase order (CPO).

owner's opposition

Owner objections to the CPO led to a Planning Inspectorate hearing where several neighbors who claimed to have been affected by the damaged property shared their concerns and highlighted the impact of the damage.

After a public hearing, the CPO was approved by the Secretary of State and Mr Harringay took possession of the house.

To ensure the homes are not left in their current state, the council will impose conditions on the sale, requiring the new owners to complete any necessary renovations before the deal is finalized.

Housing stock can be optimized by enforcing Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPOs) and utilizing these vacant properties. ”

Sarah Williams, cabinet member for housing and planning, said: “Empty properties left in disrepair not only waste valuable housing but can also have a negative impact on the surrounding area.”

“So targeting those that are long-standing and are causing a nuisance to the community is a huge priority for us.

“The ongoing housing crisis leaves thousands of people in urgent need of safe, well-maintained housing. By implementing Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPOs) and making use of these vacant properties, You can optimize your housing stock.

“Our efforts to revitalize these homes not only address the needs of those in need of housing, but also improve the local environment.”
