Major parliament plans to ban real estate agent boards of directors

Main central London councils already have restrictions on estate agent boards in some areas, but are set to introduce even tougher restrictions.

Westminster City Council is now asking estate agents to seek council permission for conservation streets.

A report to the Cabinet for Planning and Economic Development recommends that the Government seek a Regulation 7 directive, which means estate agents must seek permission to erect notice boards.

The City Council would like to move towards permanently covering protected areas if it is not possible to secure protected areas that cover the entire area.

“Unmanaged and uncoordinated installation of real estate agent bulletin boards can cause significant damage to the visual amenity and character of an area,” the report states.

“The use of such real estate agent bulletin boards currently provides little benefit in terms of advertising the availability of individual properties to targeted tenants.”

There has been a debate in the real estate industry about whether bulletin boards are still necessary now that online search has become so dominant.

However, many agents still believe there is value in letting locals and passers-by know about the availability of properties for rent and purchase.

But agents can come under fire if bulletin boards aren't removed quickly after a property is rented or sold.
