Inflation falls in December, but pressure on homeowners remains

UK inflation fell for the first time in three months in December, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics.

The inflation rate for the year to December was 2.5%, slowing from 2.6% in the previous month.

However, the Consumer Price Index, which includes the cost of owner-occupied housing (CPIH), rose 3.5% in the 12 months to December 2024, unchanged from November.

On a monthly basis, the CPIH increase rate was 0.3% in December 2024, down from 0.4% in December 2023.

The owner housing costs (OOH) component of CPIH rose by 8.0% in the 12 months to December 2024, up from 7.8% in the 12 months to November.

This is the highest annual percentage rate since February 1992 in the Constructed Historic Series. OOH costs increased by 0.6% last month compared to an increase of 0.4% in the previous month.
