Housing committee member Amesbury pleads guilty to assault

Councilor Mike Amesbury, a member of the housing committee, has pleaded guilty to assault after attacking a man in Cheshire.

Amesbury, who represents Runcorn and Helsby, admitted assaulting 45-year-old Paul Fellows at Chester Magistrates' Court.

He was suspended from Labor after CCTV footage of the incident, which took place at 2.45am on October 26 last year, was leaked.

He remains a member of parliament and sits as an independent on 11 powerful housing committees.

Alison Storey, prosecuting, told the court that Ms Fellows was in Frodsham town center and went to a taxi rank alone in the early hours after drinking.

Mr Storey added: “Mr Amesbury also arrived at the same taxi rank. He was also drinking alone.”

The court heard Fellows recognized Amesbury and contacted him to complain about the town's bridge being closed.

This led to an altercation in which Mr Amesbury, 56, punched Mr Fellows to the ground and continued to punch him.

Mr Amesbury previously said he felt “threatened” by Fellows.

District Judge Tanveer Ikram said the sentencing guidelines suggested the lawmaker's punishment ranged from “a community order or even a prison term.”

“We are keeping all options open at this stage,” the judge added.

Speaking outside court, the lawmaker said his actions were “deeply regrettable” and added that he was “deeply sorry” to Fellowes and his family.

Amesbury is scheduled to be sentenced next month. He could lose his seat in the House of Representatives if he is sent to prison or given a suspended sentence.

If he is sentenced to less than a year in prison, even if suspended, he will be responsible for a recall process, requiring 10% of registered voters in his seat to sign a petition calling for a by-election. If so, a by-election will be called.

A prison sentence of more than one year means automatic loss of seat.

Mr Amesbury won the seat in the July general election with a majority of 14,696 votes.

He has been a Labor MP since 2017 and shadow minister from 2018 to 2024. He previously served as a local councilor for Manchester.

A Labor Party spokesperson said: “Mike Amesbury is right to take responsibility for his unacceptable behavior.

“As legal proceedings are still ongoing, we are unable to comment further.”
