We get a lot of clients who are specifically looking to deal with female advisors. There aren't nearly enough around!

My mortgage angel is named after my late nan. After I lost her, I always felt like she was still there, looking over my shoulder and guiding me toward the right life decisions. I wanted to use Nan's influence to help others do the same.

I love the mortgage industry because it is constantly evolving

My Mortgage Angel is the trading style of Mark Cornelius, an Appointed Representative of Quilter Wealth Limited and Quilter Mortgage Planning Limited. They are authorized and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

How did you become a broker?

I worked with an excellent mortgage broker who helped me buy my first home. His advice saved me a small fortune and I was very impressed. Once I got the keys to my new house, I put out my study books and took the mortgage exam.

After qualifying, I started working on plans to become self-employed as I wanted something that would also suit my family's needs. I haven't looked back since.

With one request, we will ask the lender to take steps to shorten the time frame

It is my philosophy to go above and beyond for my clients and the rewards are worth more than money to me.

What plans do you have for the future of your company?

My Mortgage Angel has grown exponentially since it was founded in 2016. This growth primarily comes from word of mouth and recommendations based on our personalized service.

Since the general election there has definitely been more certainty in the market and we are getting more inquiries. In 2021 I took on the role of office assistant and am currently looking for another Mortgage Advisor to join the team.

What can lenders do to best improve brokers' lives?

It has been a difficult time for lenders over the past few years, but many have done what they can to innovate and pivot quickly to help move as many people as possible.

It is my philosophy to go above and beyond for my clients and the reward is worth more than the money

If you have one request, ask the lender to take steps to shorten the time frame. Whether you're waiting for a hold, waiting for them to evaluate the document, waiting for an evaluation, if you can speed up this process, it will help you turn offers faster.

What advice do you have regarding brokers?

The mortgage industry is an exciting place. We can help people move into their dream homes or unlock capital to make home improvements. Often through the right mortgage we can help individuals improve their quality of life.

We provide every client with a highly personalized service based not only on what they need now, but also on what they need in the future.

If you're starting out as a broker, get on board with a room full of like-minded people. Other peers in the industry will support you, motivate you and help you celebrate your wins. It's an incredibly collaborative industry.

How can the industry encourage new intake of brokers?

I love the mortgage industry because it is constantly evolving. Whether rates are going up or down, it's time to find the right solution for your client.

It's also an industry that thrives on innovation, with lenders and brokers constantly trying to find new and creative ways to help more people.

To encourage more people to train as brokers, we need to target those seeking retraining and do something new.

We get a lot of clients who are specifically looking to address women advisors. There are not enough around!

We also need to do more to inspire the younger generation. We've been to careers sessions at our local secondary school and realize it's not the type of job a 15-year-old would naturally consider. But once you show them what mortgage advisors mean and how they can help individuals secure their dreams, you'll see the dial shift.

Being a Mortgage Advisor is very satisfying. I don't do anything else.
