Greens launched last ditch bid to save rent management

The Scottish Green Party has launched a final ditch bid to maintain current rent control and ban “winter evictions.”

They were in the Scottish Nationalist Party and the government until April last year, but it was Green Minister Patrick Harvey who introduced the rent measures.

Currently, they are opposed to the SNP's proposal under the New Housing (Scotland) bill, ensuring that rent increases in designated areas are at the consumer price index (CPI) and the 1% cap, with the maximum limit of 6%.

Rent caps apply to rent increases both during and between tenants and important.

A temporary rent arbitration scheme was introduced last year.

Chapman said:

“The housing market is broken. We need better regulations rather than fewer to tackle the rising costs of housing.

“We're in a residential emergency. We need to act like that. It means ensuring strong, permanent protections that allow tenants to turn their homes into homes,” she says.

The Greens also introduced amendments to the bill that bans evictions between November and March each year.
